Hans von Bartels was a German painter.
Bartels is associated with the Düsseldorf school of painting. Although an oil painter of great power, he is also one of the leading German water-colour painters, mainly of marines and scenes of fishing life, painted with rude vigour and a great display of technical skill. Bartels made a great contribution to the development of the watercolour. He was the first to use watercolour paint of large formats without the earlier conventions. From 1887 Von Bartels came every summer to the Dutch coast, especially to Katwijk aan Zee, to paint the fisherfolk and their labour. He excels in storm scenes and in depicting the strong, healthy fishing-folk of the northern coasts. He became an honorary member of leading English, German, Dutch, Belgian and Austrian art societies.
Pieter van der Heyden was a Belgian-Flemish printmaker who is known for his reproductive engravings after works by leading Flemish painters and designers of the 16th century.
Eugène Louis Boudin was one of the first French landscape painters to paint outdoors. Boudin was a marine painter, and expert in the rendering of all that goes upon the sea and along its shores. His pastels, summary and economic, garnered the splendid eulogy of Baudelaire; and Corot called him the «King of the skies».
Friedrich Kallmorgen was a German Impressionist painter who specialized in landscapes and cityscapes.
Heinrich Bürkel was a German artist of the mid-nineteenth century. He is known as a painter and graphic artist, representative of the Biedermeier style.
Heinrich Bürkel specialized in genre and landscape paintings, especially winter landscapes. He often used Staffage and depicted animals. His work showed the influence of the old Dutch and Italian masters. Bürkel enjoyed great popularity, his paintings were actively acquired for private collections, including in America. The master painted about 1000 paintings and created about 6000 drawings.
Walter Leistikow was a German painter of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He is known as a landscape painter, graphic artist, designer and art historian, a representative of the Jugendstil.
Early in his career Leistikow was one of the founders of the art group "Association of Eleven", which advocated modern art, rejecting academism. His landscapes, inspired by the Barbizon School, evolved toward simplification, sometimes with Art Nouveau influences. The artist sought to stylize landscapes, eschewing excessive detail in favor of silhouettes and blurred lines.
He also designed furniture, carpets and wallpaper, and in 1902 created trading cards for the Stollwerck chocolate company.
Burkhard Held is German painter living and working in Berlin, Germany. His art is based on figuration dissolving into abstraction. In 1993 he became professor at the Berlin University of the Arts and later served as a professor at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, PRC. Burkhard Held is a figurative painter, who dissolves his motifs – landscapes, portraits, flowers – into color fields with a strong tendency towards autonomy. His strongly colored all-over images reinterpret things as abstract and then lead the back into figuration. In 2009 Held started to dedicate himself to the subject of flowers: blossoms become compositions with a landscape character, and are distributed in equally strong colors across the canvas.
